An Internet search on the words "surgical precision" yields more than 23 million results, mostly applications of the term to thousands of non-medical topics to convey exactness and accuracy. But for the patient in the surgery suite and the surgeon performing a procedure, the degree of precision achieved is a major factor in determining the outcome: restoration of health and/or function, pain reduction and other measurable improvements in well-being. In surgical techniques and technology, the pursuit of greater precision is ongoing. Enter computer-guided orthopedic surgery at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA where its Hip and Knee Joint Replacement Center is leading the way in modern knee replacements. Using an advanced MRI and computer technology to design a custom cutting guide, medical director Dr. George Cautilli and his colleagues use the guide during surgery to position the knee implant to fit the patient's natural joint. This customized knee replacement can last longer and often results in less potential blood loss and less anesthesia during the shorter surgical procedure, and less chance of infection afterwards. Dr. Cautilli talks with Rasa Kaye about the new surgical technique for knees, as well as advances in micro-vascular hand and arthroscopic shoulder surgeries.

Dr. George Cautilli was featured in an article by St. Mary's Medical Center for giving a Fairless Hills woman a "New Lease on Life" after a cutting-edge, customized knee replacement surgery computer-guided technique was performed. Click here to read the article.
